Soccer Falls to No. 8 Carondelet in CIF NorCal Semis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Eighth-seeded Carondelet posted its second consecutive upset with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over No. 5 seed St. Francis on Thursday at Cristo Rey High School in the 2020 CIF State Northern California Division I Regional semifinals. Carondelet advances to Saturday's final against No. 2 Archbishop Mitty.

"We came out a little flat footed but at halftime (tied 1-1) we understood we could play," said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson '86. "Today was not one of our best but we still battled and had some chances."

St. Francis (23-3-3) had its 12-game-winning streak snapped one game short of reaching a CIF Northern California Regional final for the second consecutive season. The Troubadours won the 2019 Division II title.

"When you have such a great group it is not just the result that is sad," said Robinson. "The ending of the people is the sad part. I have had Marli Berry and Grace Barger since they were freshmen. You can't replace them."

The Troubies fell behind early 1-0 as the Cougars took the lead on a goal by sophomore Annaliese Giusto. Junior Jackie Stanco tied the game off a restart with a bending shot from the left side that got over the goalie's reach. It has her 22nd goals of the season.

"It was a great restart," said Robinson after the foul taken by Barger. "She does special things and her moment of brilliance kept us in the game. We were right back in it 1-1 and it helped. We had moments where we got the game back and had moments we were chasing."

Junior Mia Solorio-Smith gave SF the lead in the 57th minute.

"It was good," said Solorio-Smith of her seventh goal and third in the postseason. "It got us back in the game. We could just not hold it."

Carondelet (22-5-1) responded with two back-to-back goals to take the lead, scoring twice over the next four minutes with goals by senior Lexi Zandonella and junior Jordyn Young

"Against good teams, you can't give them anything," said Robinson.

The Troubadours won the Section title for the first time since 2014, recording the 14th team title in school history.

"I am proud of us," said Solorio-Smith. "We had a great season. We won Sections and made it to D1 Regionals. We could have done a little more in the first half but I think we did well."

It was their second consecutive CIF Northern California Regional appearance in the third year of the event.
