Soccer Wins at Sheldon on Two Second-Half Goals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis soccer team defeated Sheldon on Wednesday 2-0 behind second-half goals by seniors Marli Berry and Taylor Earle. The win moved the team to second-place in the Delta League at 5-1-2.

"We were all trying super hard to get a goal and it was not happening, said Berry, who has committed to play at Howard University in the fall.

After a scoreless first half and several missed chances, the Troubadours (14-2-3) finally connected off a header by Berry in the 63rd minute off a pass from sophomore Kenna Delemos.

"It was a beautiful ball win, all the defenders came to me and hit it over the keepers head," recalled Berry, who scored her fifth of the season.

With the lead, the Troubies were able to keep control and get a second insurance goal off the foot of Taylor Earle. She tapped in a volley near the back post off a perfectly positioned pass by junior Jackie Stanco.

"It was a great cross by Jackie Stanco, It lofted right in the air over to the back post," said Earle. "I was there to one-time touch it in."

It was the ninth of the season for Earle and third consecutive game with a goal.

The team has their bye this week before hosting Elk Grove on Feb. 5 and traveling to Davis on Feb. 7.
