Soccer Defeats Elk Grove on Two Set Pieces

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis soccer team defeated Elk Grove 2-0 to improve to 3-0 in Delta League play via two corner kick goals.

"It was good to see us finish two set pieces," said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson.

Senior Ari Spence pushed across the first goal on a corner in the final minutes of the first half to give the Troubadours a 1-0 lead.

Senior Marli Berry extended the lead to 2-0 on a header off a Lindsey Piatanesi corner two minutes into the second half.

"Piat played a beautiful ball placed right to me and I had to do get over a few players," said Berry. "It gave us the motivation to keep playing and really put it away."

Goalies Kim Riley and Mia Collins combined for the shutout as the Troubie defense continued its strong play.

"Our defense is really strong and we communicate really well with each other," said junior Hailey Lemon. "We play through each line and it ends up being good."

St. Francis (11-1-1) hosts Davis on Wednesday at Cristo Rey HS. The Troubies are ranked No. 15 by TopDrawerSoccer.com Fab 50 with Davis listed at No. 46 in the latest rankings released on Jan. 7.
