Basketball Falls in Holy Hoops; JV Teams Post Victories over Falcons

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Mia Fleming-Mullins had 20 points in a 50-44 loss to Christian Brothers in front of a sold out gym Saturday night in the annual Holy Hoops event.

"I am proud of the girls," said Head Coach Heather Volek Brownholtz. "We competed. That is all I asked them to do. We had a really good matchup between Mia and Bria Shine and it was awesome to watch. It hard to play in this environment. We handled ourselves well and there are great life lessons in the adversity. It was a fun game to coach and the girls did really well."

With the game tied at 34, the Flacons closed the third quarter on a 7-1 run to take a 41-35 advantage into the final period. Fleming Mullins scored eight of her team-best 20 points in the final eight minutes but it was not enough to close the gap.

Junior Sarah Cloninger added 12 points and a team-best eight boards, while junior Mackenzie Le recorded seven points, six assists and five steals. Jasmine Lee grabbed eight boards of her own to tie for team-best honors.

Fleming-Mullins led the team with seven points in the first period, while Cloninger scored 10 first half points as the team trailed 25-24 at the break.

The Troubies hit just 3-of-15 beyond the arc and missed 15 free throws in the contest.

"We have to turn the page really quickly," said Brownholtz. "Franklin is the most important game now."

St. Francis swept the two opening games against Christian Brothers. The JV Gold team was led by sophomore Zahra Smith and freshman Emily Dusel, who both tallied double-doubles. Smith had a game high 17 boards and 11 points, while Dusel had 11 and 12 boards.  Freshman JoJo Myers led the team with 13 points.

In the opener, the JV Red team was led by Jadyn Weaver's 14 points in a 45-18 win. Sydney Dukes contributed 10 points.
