Soccer Defeats Sheldon 2-0; Preps for Stretch Run

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Lindsey Piatanesi and sophomore Marcela Ferero Pretto scored first half goals to lead the varsity soccer team to a 2-0 win over Sheldon at the Adamson Family Soccer Complex on the campus of Cristo Rey High School on Wednesday.

Piatanesi, who sis tied for the team lead with nine goals, started the scoring.

"Grace Barger played me in and then it was a 1v1 with the goalie," recalled Piatanesi. "The goalie is super tall so noticed if I shot it to the far side that she would get it so I shot to the near post and it went in."

Ferero-Pretto improved the lead to 2-0 off an assist from Piatanesi. The teams remained scoreless the rest of the afternoon as Kimberly Riley and Gigi Koerwitz combined on the shutout.

"It was really important to get momentum going and get some more confidence," said Ferero-Pretto, who scored her second goal of the season. "Last time we played them we beat them by a lot (6-0) so it was drastic change this game. The second goal really helped."

St. Francis improved to 13-2-3 and has won six of the seven Delta League games. The Troubadours have MaxPreps Top 20 at No. 18 and rank No. 43 overall in the nation.

St. Francis plays at Elk Grove on Wednesday and then hosts Davis on Friday Feb. 1 at 4:00 p.m. The Blue Devils are ranked fourth in the state and eighth nationally.

"Our momentum is really good," said Piatanesi. "We are all super excited. Davis as a rival is always a big game. We need to give ourselves more credit for our skill level."
