Get to Know: Soccer’s #16 A.J. Tanner

What does it mean to be selected a team captain?
"It is a really big confidence booster. Coming into varsity in only my second year, it was really nice of them to choose me. It makes me take on more of leadership role. It pushes me to talk more and work harder because everyone is looking up to me and the other three as role models on the field."

What do you bring to the team on the field?
"I bring a lot of communication especially being one of the center backs. The communication is a lot of what I do and helping people know their surroundings. From my perspective, I try to bring more intensity."

What the most exciting aspect of making your commitment to San Francisco State?
"The most exciting thing was just saying, 'Yes, I commit'. It was awesome. The coaches are awesome and the girls are so welcoming even the seniors. I knew right when I got there I wanted to go there. They welcomed me with open arms."

Why did you choose San Francisco State?
"I wanted to find a place where I would be close to home but far enough away to feel on my own. They had what I wanted to major in and the campus is so pretty. It has so much to offer outside of athletics."

Have you always gone by AJ?
"It is a tradition. I am AJ, My dad is BJ and my sister is CJ. They wanted to keep it going."

What is your favorite aspect of playing for St. Francis?
"My favorite thing is the girls. Even when we are having bad games, we all have each other's backs. We always keep our spirits up and create a fun environment to play in. We are here to have fun and play the sport we love."
