SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Tatum Walbeck picked off the first set at No. 2 singles while freshman Maria McDougall took Mikah Yu to a tiebreaker to start the No. 1 singles match, but St. Francis ultimately lost all six singles and all three doubles in a loss to top-seeded Woodcreek in the semifinal round of the Sac-Joaquin Section girls' tennis team championship Monday.
The fourth-seeded Troubadours finish their season at 12-6. This marked their farthest advancement into the SJS postseason since their runner-up finish in 2019.
Walbeck scored a 6-4 win to open her match again Madelyn Yu, but evened out the match with a similarly scored loss in the second. She fell behind a break in the rubber set and never recovered, eventually falling by a 6-2 final. Walbeck was the lone SF player to post a set win. McDougall went to the brink in her first set but the older Yu sister caught fire in the tiebreaker, taking it 7-0 for the 7-6 win. Yu then followed with a 6-1 victory to complete the sweep.
All other matches were also decided in straight sets. The longest battle belonged to St. Francis' Anna Dinh and Woodcreek Mandy Lam at No. 5 singles. Lam won the match by scores of 6-1, 6-4, but they went so long that they outlasted both a singles and a doubles match in the adjacent court before walking off.
Monday also marked the final matches for seniors Caroline Niethammer, who held the No. 3 singles slot on Monday; and Kate Jones, who teamed with Kavya Benush at No. 2 doubles. A third senior, Claire Allaye-Chan, finished her career two weeks prior against Davis.
