Troubie freshie falls to familar foe

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – St. Francis' Maria McDougall advanced one round in the Sac-Joaquin Section individual championships at Johnson Ranch Sports Club before falling to the three-time Delta League champion Thursday afternoon.

The Troubie ninth-grader qualified for the tourney by virture of a third-place finish in the league championship. She dispatched River Valley's Valeria Ramirez by scores of 6-2, 6-2; then lost to Franklin's Aileena Hu in the second round, 6-3, 6-0. Hu defended her Delta League title for a third straight year one week earlier.

This is the third time McDougall and Hu have squared off in 2023, with all previous results also going to the Wildcat junior. St. Francis and Franklin met in dual play on September 12 and October 5, with the two occupying the No. 1 singles slot on their repsective teams' ladders.

McDougall returns to Roseville on Monday as the Troubadours head to top-seeded Woodcreek for the CIF-SJS Division II semifinal. SF beat Bear Creek and Rodriguez earlier this week to advance to the final four. Match time will be 2 p.m.
