SF tennis draws Bear Creek for section opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis drew the No. 4 seed and will host 13th-seeded Bear Creek in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II girls' tennis team championship tourney, the governing body announced Friday morning.

The match will start at 1:30 p.m. at Rio Del Oro Sports Club, located at Scripps Drive and American River Drive in Sacramento.

The Troubadours earned an automatic berth into the SJS postseason by virtue of a third-place finish in the Delta League, trailing undefeated Davis and second-place Pleasant Grove. Similarly, the Bruins took third in San Joaquin Athletic Association, behind Edison and Chavez. St. Francis has a 10-5 record, not counting the single-set Day 1 exhibition matches at the Golden State Classic. Bear Creek enters the postseason with a 10-3 overall and SJAA mark.

Leading the charge for SF is freshman Maria McDougall, who sports an 8-4 singles record, all at No. 1. She also earned a spot in the CIF-SJS individual tourney, thanks to her third-place finish at the Delta League tournament. Another freshman, Alexa Randall, holds a 7-5 mark at No. 2 singles. Junior Anna Dinh also has eight total singles wins, mostly at No. 5 and 6 singles, plus she has two doubles victories this season.

St. Francis has 10 SJS championships to its name, with the most recent coming in 2017. The Troubies' last appearance in the section final was in 2019, ending a streak of four straight years in the title match.
