Troubies advance to face Woodcreek in SJS semifinal

Troubies advance to face Woodcreek in SJS semifinal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshmen Maria McDougall and Alexa Randall surrendered just one game between them while all three doubles matches scored victories, highlighting St. Francis in a 6-3 win over Rodriguez in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II girls' tennis team tournament, held at Rio Del Oro Sports Club Wednesday afternoon.

The  fourth-seeded Troubadours improve to 12-5 for the season, and will head to No. 1 Woodcreek at 2 p.m. on Monday.

McDougall made quick work of Bella Connerly at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win. One court over, Alexa Randall had dispatched Taylor Tieu in a "double bagel" win at No. 2 singles. However, the Mustangs battled back from first-set losses at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, with Ariana Kim and Giana Anselmo picking up the victories, respectively.

But St. Francis picked up close wins in all three doubles matches to seal the team victory. Arden Garcia and Sarah Ramos-Lasso prevailed in straight sets, but both were highly competitive: 6-4, 7-5. Litzy Alengaden and Ava Ensberg traded 6-3 sets with Hayden Gilbert and Samara Angeles at No. 2 doubles, only to prevail in the third by that same score. Finally, Kavya Benush and Kate Jones were the last Troubies off the court on Wednesday. They dropped a 7-6 first set, but came back to win 4 and 4 in the second and third frames.

Monday's match at Woodcreek marks the Troubies' first trip to the section semifinals since the 2019 SF squad lost the SJS finals to Granite Bay. In the meantime, McDougall will represent her school in the section individual singles tournament at Roseville's Johnson Ranch Sports Club on Thursday and, if necessary, Friday.
