ELK GROVE, Calif. – Freshman Maria McDougall stormed back from a first-set loss to claim an 11-9 tiebreaker against Emi Mikami at No. 1 singles, but St. Francis managed just one other singles victory and one doubles triumph in falling, 6-3, to Pleasant Grove in Delta League girls' tennis action Thursday.
The Troubadours slip to 5-2 for the season and 2-1 in league play.
Junior Anna Dinh won two long sets, 7-6, 7-5, in her No. 6 singles matchup against Luren Hoang. Meanwhile, the tandem of Arden Garcia and Sarah Ramos-Lasso picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. The No. 3 doubles squad of Ava Ensberg and Ananya Saini opened strong against Maya Ninigian and Julian Orozco, prevailing by a 6-3 score in the first set. However, the Eagle pair outlasted their Troubie guests in a 7-6 equalizer, then claimed the tiebreaker by a 10-5 score.
McDougall dropped a 7-6 opening set against Mikami, one of three returning All-Delta League players on the PG roster. She stormed back to a dominating 6-1 win the force the tiebreaker, then went to the wire in the single-game third. The win caps a week in which McDougall faced the defending Delta League Player of the Year in Franklin's Aileena Hu just two days earlier.
St. Francis returns to Elk Grove to take on Sheldon for continued league play on Tuesday. Match time is 3:45 p.m.
