Troubies win two at Golden State Classic

Troubies win two at Golden State Classic

ATHERTON, Calif. – Junior Tatum Walbeck, sophomore Sophia Troppmann and the doubles tandem of Caroline Niethammer and Arden Garcia each won both of their respective matches as St. Francis defeated Aragon and Evergreen Valley by identical 5-2 team scores, capping Day 2 of the Golden State Tennis Classic at Menlo School Saturday.

Saturday's play consisted of dual matches of four singles and three doubles, contrasting from the traditional six-and-three format. All players competed in best-of-three matches, as opposed to the single-set "mini-matches" conducted during Friday's play.

The Golden State Tennis Classic historically features some of the top teams from the Bay Area, plus other programs from Northern, Central and even Southern California forming a 32-team field.

The Troubies opened Saturday's action with the win over Aragon, claiming all four singles matches plus the No. 1 doubles court. Freshman Maria McDougall and Troppmann won at Nos. 1 and 4 in straight sets, while Alexa Randall and Walbeck each claimed victories in split sets. Randall lost to Lian Wang in the first set of the No. 2 singles match, stormed to a 6-0 triumph in the second, then won the tiebreaker, 10-5. Walbeck had the opposite journey: a 6-4 win to start, a 6-0 loss in the second, then a similar 10-5 tiebreaker against Taylor Lee at No. 3.

The top SF doubles pairing of Niethammer and Garcia went split sets against Jessa Williams and Kat Russell, 6-1 and 4-6, before prevailing in yet another 10-5 tiebreaker.

Against Evergreen Valley, it was the Troubie doubles that ran the table, with Anna Dinh and Kavya Benush combining for a 6-0, 6-0 double bagel at No. 2. Sarah Ramos-Lasso and Ava Ensberg breezed through their No. 3 matchup, 6-1, 6-1. Meanwhile, Walbeck and Troppmann each claimed straight-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

St. Francis returns to Delta League action on Tuesday, traveling to Franklin for a 3:45 p.m. dual match.
