Tennis sweeps Elk Grove in home opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Two doubles tandems and two singles players scored double-bagel wins as St. Francis tennis swept Elk Grove, 9-0, in its home and Delta League opener at Rio Del Oro Sports Club Tuesday afternoon.

The Troubadours pick up their first win of the season, improving to 1-2 overall and opening league play at 0-1.

Freshman Alexa Randall and junior Anna Dinh won at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively, by matching scores of 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, the No. 2 doubles pairing of Kavya Benush and Kate Jones, and the No. 3 doubles team of Claire Allaye-Chan and Ava Ensberg also dispatched their Thundering Herd foe by such scores.

In fact, all nine Troubie victories came in straight sets overall. No. 3 singles Tatum Walbeck beat Erika Yepes by a 6-1, 6-0 final, with Caroline Niethammer defeated Avery Rau, 6-2, 6-1, in the next court. Another freshman, Maria McDougall, breezed past Xandrei Miguel by a 6-0, 6-1 tally at No. 1 singles. Meanwhile, the No. 1 doubles team of Arden Garcia and Sarah Ramos-Lasso went 6-1, 6-1 in its win over Anna Scruggs and Jessica Snodgrass.

The closest matchup took place on the No. 5 singles court, with Sophia Troppmann nipping Tessa Limoges in a tiebreaker for the first set, then rolling to a 6-2 victory in the second. St. Francis' Katharina Gensler and Anya Bilal took an 8-2 pro set in an exhibition doubles matchup.

Tuesday's league match begins a busy week overall for the Troubies, who travel to Cosumnes Oaks for a Wednesday dual, then take on a tough field at the Golden State Tennis Classic at Menlo on Friday and Saturday.
