Troubies showcase new talent during season-opening scrimmage

FOLSOM, Calif. – A pair of freshmen, Maria McDougall at No. 1 and Alexa Randall at No. 2, scored singles wins at the top of the boxscore, as St. Francis opened its season with an exhibition dual against Oak Ridge in girls' prep tennis at Broadstone Sports Club Thursday night.

The Troubadours also came away with a split-set win at No. 3 doubles, with Kate Jones and Laila Shamshad snaring a 10-4 tiebreaker set, as SF ended up with a 6-3 loss. The meeting counts as a scrimmage for the Troubies, which finished their tryouts approximately one week earlier. Oak Ridge had already competed in regular-season matchups with Vista Del Lago and St. Mary's leading up to Thursday.

McDougall quickly dispatched Ava Aubin by scores of 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Randall swept Sophia Hammond by a 6-1, 6-4 final. St. Francis battled at No. 5 singles, with sophomore Sophia Troppmann coming back from a 6-3 first-set loss to a 6-4 equalizer in the second. But opponent Rianna Dhillon ran away with a 10-3 tiebreaker to seal the win.

The Troubies travel to McClatchy for their second scrimmage of the year on August 31, then opens the season with a league dual against Elk Grove on September 5.
