Carmichael steps down from SFHS hoop post
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – David Carmichael has stepped down from his post as St. Francis Catholic High School head varsity basketball coach, Director of Athletics Mark McGreevy announced Tuesday. The veteran mentor will remain with the Troubadours program in a different capacity, and will continue to run the school's popular summer basketball camp.

"Coach Carmichael's contributions to the St. Francis mission and the Troubie athletics culture has been invaluable in his brief tenure thus far – particularly over the past two COVID-affected seasons," said McGreevy. "We are thankful that he will still be a part of this program, such that his experience and expertise can continue to serve as assets for our young athletes."

Carmichael owns more than four decades of coaching experience, with extended stints at Oxnard College (1980-87) and Sacramento City College (1987-2012) highlighting his record. He served as an assistant at Christian Brothers for three seasons prior to his arrival at SFHS in December 2020.

Carmichael guided the Troubies through an abbreviated season in the spring of 2021, then enjoyed a 14-12 overall mark in his first full season this year. St. Francis earned a berth in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I tournament, while his non-Delta League schedule included victories against the likes of Antelope and Grant.

"I am extremely appreciative to be welcomed by the St. Francis family," said Carmichael. "When I first joined the coaching staff, I considered it a blessing that I could impact the lives of students through sport. As I often tell my players, growing in basketball is a marathon, not a sprint. That I may continue to be a part of that process is another blessing, and I look forward to taking part in their journey."

Carmichael's precise role in the Troubie program – other than running the June 13-17 basketball camp – remains to be determined. A full search for the new head coach will begin soon.
