Troubies dominate in home hoops tripleheader
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior guard Jo Jo Myers drained three three-pointers en route to a team-leading 15 points, sophomore wing Brianna McGahan added 10 points and senior forward Zahra Smith collected a season-best 11 rebounds, leading St. Francis to a 65-24 win over Sheldon in Delta League girls' varsity basketball action Friday night.
 
All three Troubadour teams won in convincing fashion during the home tripleheader, with the all-freshman junior varsity Red claiming a 54-17 victory over El Dorado and the JV Gold squad prevailing, 67-11, against Sheldon's jayvees.
 
St. Francis varsity improves to 10-7 for the year and 2-1 in Delta League play. JV Gold is now 12-3 overall while JV Red moves to 11-3.
 
The first of Myers' treys, along with long-range goals from Smith and Carolina Ingenito, came in a 17-1 start for the Troubies in the varsity game. In fact, the Huskies did not sink a field goal until the final minute of the opening stanza, when sophomore Nyah Duong hit a two-pointer to bring the score to 19-6.
 
St. Francis scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters to hold a 42-14 edge at the halftime break, then again held Sheldon to a single field goal in each of the third and fourth to close out the victory.
 
Sophomore Chidera Okoye narrowly missed her third double-double of the season, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds. Furthermore, all 12 active players appeared in the scoring column.
 
Earlier in the evening, St. Francis' JV Gold dominated Sheldon, riding a 17-2 first-quarter edge and a 37-4 halftime advantage to the 67-11 victory. Freshman guard Sydney Teoh led the Troubies offensively with with 16 points, while sharpshooter Eva Karamanoukian added 14 points – including eight in the opening frame. Mackenzie Tan chipped in 10 more to give SFHS three players in double figures in the scorebook.
 
Likewise, three Troubies scored in double digits to lead the JV Red crew to the 54-17 win over El Dorado in the opener of Friday's tripleheader. Guards Lilian Vicio and Karly Okamoto netted 17 and 14 points, respectively, while post Alexis Heise poured in 16 points with six rebounds. Vicio also had team highs of five assists and three steals for SF, which led 21-3 through the first quarter and 33-5 at the halftime break.
 
The St. Francis JV Gold and varsity squads return to action in a quick turnaround, heading to Cosumnes Oaks for 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. tipoffs on Saturday. This is a rescheduled doubleheader from a Jan. 11 Delta League matchup that got postponed due to COVID-19. 
 
Meanwhile, JV Red waits almost two weeks for its next action, hosting Folsom on February 4 as a lead-in to the older teams' league visit from Franklin.
