Troubies slay Dragons to launch 2021-22 season

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Jo Jo Myers and senior Raquel Smith each scored 15 points to lead St. Francis to a 78-35 win over Sacramento High in a season-opening, non-conference girls basketball game at the SFHS gym Friday night.

The Troubadours open the first full season under head coach David Carmichael, who assumed the varsity helm in December of 2020.

"Like I told the team, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon," said Carmichael. "It's nice to play somebody we had never seen, and we did some real good things. And we did some things that were a little suspect, but everybody contributed, and that's what we'll need to do what we want to do."

Indeed, all 10 active Troubie players scored in the win. Senior post Oge Okoyo chipped in another 11 to make it three SFHS players with double-digit offense. The Troubies scored the first eight points of the contest, then never trailed for the remainder, holding a 20-8 lead through the first quarter and a 40-17 advantage at the halftime break. Myers scored seven of her points in that opening quarter, while Smith put up eight of her 15 in the finale.

Senior guard Carolina Ingenito contributed an all-around game of eight points, six assists and half of her team's 16 steals.

The JV Gold and JV Red teams scrimmaged Folsom High in the lead-up to the varsity season opener.

The Troubadour varsity squad returns to action against West Campus High in the annual Foundation Game, a charity contest for the Sac-Joaquin Section scholarship programs. That game takes place on Monday, November 29, and has been relocated to St. Francis. Tickets will be available via GoFan.
