Varsity, JV Gold prevail at Valley tourney

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior post Raquel Smith scored the equalizer with 46 seconds left and then added the final free throw to lift St. Francis varsity to a 50-47 win over Antelope, while Sydney Teoh led the Troubadour JV Gold squad to a 57-22 win over Laguna Creek on the second day of Valley's Viking Tournament Friday.

The SFHS varsity improves to 2-3 for the year. The JV Gold, which advances to the tourney's title game, moves to 5-1 overall.

Smith and junior guard Jo Jo Myers each totaled a team-leading 13 points. Myers drained three three-pointers as part of her total. Senior Oge Okoye added another eight points with five rebounds. Guard Anne Sale led with seven rebounds and six assists to go with six points and a pair of deflections.

The Troubies came out of halftime in a 26-15 hole, and never erased the deficit until the final minute.

The JV Gold, which advanced to the semifinals after Pioneer High withdrew from the tournament, opened strong with Sianna Squires delivering eight of her 12 total points in the first quarter. Oddly, this marked the second time St. Francis faced LC this week, as the Gold team dispatched the Cardinals just three nights earlier.

The JV Gold will face the winner of River City-Wood game at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The St. Francis varsity will tip off in the fifth-place game against host Valley at 2:30 p.m.
