Huskies upset Troubies in Delta League finale

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Junior Jadyn Weaver continued her hot streak from beyond the arc, scoring five three-pointers for a team-leading 15 points, but St. Francis lost a 47-45 battle to Sheldon in the final minute of play to close out the Delta League varsity girls' basketball season Friday night.

The Troubadours slip to 14-11 for the year and 7-5 in league play. The Huskies improve to 7-15 overall and 4-8 on the Delta League ledger.

Weaver hit 5 of 12 from long range for the game but the rest of the SF roster managed just 4-for-16 for a .250 clip, part of a 16-for-59 (.271) overall night from the field. Zahra Smith was a bright spot down low, hitting 5 of 10 for 10 points to go with six rebounds.

The Troubies held as much as a 38-30 lead midway through the final  quarter before an 8-2 Husky run closed the gap to just 40-38. Sheldon took a 44-43 lead with 42 seconds, surrendered the advantage on the next turn down, then reclaimed the edge on three free throws with 13 ticks left.

The varsity game followed a 75-12 win by the St. Francis junior varsity Gold squad. Sydney Teoh scored 18 points, Eva Karamanoukian added 15 and Mackenzie Tan chipped in another 14 to give the Troubies three players in double-digit scoring.

St. Francis varsity finishes third in the Delta League standings, pending the outcome of Friday's Cosumnes Oaks-Franklin game. The Troubies will then await the pairings for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section tournament, which starts on Thursday.
