Davis edges St. Francis in key Delta League matchup

DAVIS, Calif. – Junior guard Jo Jo Myers sank four three-pointers as part of her team-leading 16 points, but St. Francis could not offset its host's 27 trips to the free-throw line, falling in a 54-51 battle to Davis in Delta League varsity girls' basketball action Friday night.

The Troubadours move to 11-9 for the season and 3-3 in league play. A St. Francis win would have resulted in a tie between the two teams for second place in the Delta League race; instead, the Blue Devils improve to 5-1.

The two teams battled to seven ties, including one at 51-51 with 1:22 remaining. St. Francis also had to work its way out of such deficits as 28-16 late in the second half and 46-41 midway through the fourth, but managed to hold brief leads late in the third (39-36 with 1:06 remaining) and fourth (51-50 at 1:35).

Myers had half of her team's output from beyond the arc while coming up with five of SF's 12 steals. Sophomore Brianna McGahan, playing in her hometown, sank four treys for 12 points while matching fellow sophomore teammate Chidera Okoye with six rebounds.

Still, the Troubies were charged with 21 fouls to the Blue Devils' nine. Davis converted 20 of its 27 attempts from the stripe, in contrast to St. Francis' 7-for-10 in free throws.

Earlier in the evening, guard Eva Karamanoukian sank a pair of three-pointers en route to a team-best 20 points, while Sydney Teoh and Emma Karamanoukian chipped in offensive totals of 14 and 12, respectively, leading JV Gold to a 58-18 win over Davis.

The Troubies led 16-5 after the first eight minutes and 35-13 at the halftime break, then allowed just one bucket in each of the final two frames. They move to 15-4 for the season, including a 6-0 record against Delta League schools.

Both teams rematch with the Blue Devils at home on Saturday afternoon. JV Gold plays at noon while varsity follows at 1:30. This doubleheader is a rescheduling of an event originally slated for January 4 then against on January 13.
