Chidera Okoye earns all-tourney as Troubies blast host Vikings

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore post Chidera Okoye scored a team-leading 18 points on 8-for-8 shooting to earn all-tournament honors while three other Troubadour players chipped in double-digit offense, as the St. Francis varsity squad dispatched host Valley High, 83-42, in the Viking Tournament consolation championship Saturday.

The Troubies even their record to 3-3 for the season.

Jadyn Weaver and Nikki Sutliff-Soto each drained three three-pointers en route to scoring totals of 16 and 13, respectively. Raquel Smith did her work in the paint, hitting 5 of 9 from the floor for 10 points. Chidera Okoye also led the way in rebounding with nine, while point guard Jo Jo Myers logged seven assists and two of her team's 15 steals.

Overall, the St. Francis defense smothered the Vikings to just 27 percent shooting (9-for-33). The Troubies ran up a 15-2 edge across the first 5:20 of play, and never surrendered the lead. The Vikings closed the gap to as little as 44-34 midway through the third, but a run of 26 unanswered to start the fourth quarter helped SFHS pull away to the widest margin of victory since a 78-35 win over Sac High to open the season.

Saturday's win comes off a 50-47 thriller over Antelope on Friday night, and came on the heels of the St. Francis JV Gold tournament win at Valley earlier in the day. More coverage of these games are available at GoTroubies.com.

The St. Francis varsity team returns to action in a Monday night doubleheader at Grant High during the school's week of final examinations, then the Troubies will kick off the winter break at Del Oro High for the Mike Takayama Memorial Tournament from Dec. 16-18.
