Troubies edge Cougars to close out Takayama tourney

LOOMIS, Calif. – Senior forward Raquel Smith scored eight points while sophomore Brianna McGahan added five points and a team-leading seven rebounds, as St. Francis edged Foothill of Palo Cedro, 38-37, in the consolation championship of the Mike Takayama Memorial Tournament at Del Oro High Saturday.

The Troubadours improve to 6-4 for the season.

St. Francis overcame a 23-16 halftime deficit, eventually pulling to within a 30-27 hole entering the fourth. Assistant coach Angela Dusel credited the defense for the comeback, with Emily Dusel and Oge Okoye stepping in for the usual starters to provide a lift. "That group fired the team up defensively and got us 11 points," she said. "In the fourth quarter, we maintained the high-energy D and followed with another 11 points."

Guard guard Anne Sale scored another six points while senior post Zahra Smith added five. Both Smiths plus senior Oge Okoye grabbed five boards to help the Troubies to a 37-30 rebounding margin.

St. Francis returns to action for a home tripleheader with the JV Red and JV Gold squads against Inderkum on Monday. Tip-off times are 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m.
