Troubie varsity downed by Laguna Creek in home tripleheader
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The St. Francis JV Red team dispatched Kennedy High's jayvee squad by a 38-21 final, then the Troubadour JV Gold squad scored 31 unanswered points to start a 46-8 win over its Laguna Creek counterpart, but the SFHS varsity team fell to undefeated Laguna Creek, 73-32, as part of a home girls' basketball tripleheader Tuesday night.

Sophomore post Chidera Okoye scored eight points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Junior Jadyn Weaver matched the eight points, while senior Carolina Ingenito added seven points to go with four rebounds and five deflections. Ingenito shot 3-for-6 from the floor and Zahra Smith came off the bench to hit another 2 of 3, but the rest of the team combined for 10-for-35 shooting for the night.

The Troubie varsity slips to 1-2 for the season.

In Tuesday's second game, sophomore guard Emma Karamanoukian led the JV Gold with 12 points and five steals, while her twin sister Eva was credited as the team's player of the game for an effort that kept Laguna Creek off the scoreboard until 3:36 remaining in the second quarter. Sianna Squires chipped in another nine points and four steals while Sydney Teoh contributed eight tallies on offense.

Still, the JV Gold defense remained a point of pride for first-year head coach Melissa Triebwasser, whose team has held teams to 14 or fewer three times in the first five games of the 2021-22 season.

"I'm really happy with the way we've grown at this point in the season. We're five games in and we're just hitting the tip of the iceberg of what we're capable of," said Triebwasser. "Defensively, the game plan is really coming together, and the effort that the girls bring night in and night out is the most impressive part of what we're doing on the floor right now."

"Laguna Creek is a really good basketball team, and we've made some really good teams look bad this year. That has been our message this year. It's not about who we play, it's about how we execute. When they decide they want to shut someone down – whether an individual player or a team as a whole – they prove that they can be a real menace for opposing offenses, and it's a lot of fun to watch."

Earlier in the evening, the JV Red overcame some cold shooting (1-for-20) in the first quarter to claim the 17-point win over the Cougars. Lilian Vicio led the way with 15 points while providing five assists, six rebounds and four steals. Post Alexis Heise patrolled the boards with 16 total rebounds, including 12 on offense.

The St. Francis varsity and JV Gold teams head to Valley for a three-day tournament starting on Thursday, while the JV Red crew returns to action after final examinations as part of the home tripleheader with Inderkum on December 20.
