St. Francis slips in second half against Calaveras

LOOMIS, Calif. – Sophomore Chidera Okoye scored a team-leading 10 points while Jadyn Weaver added nine, but St. Francis varsity basketball managed just 10 points after a 24-13 halftime lead in a 41-34 loss to Calaveras High in the first round of the Mike Takayama Memorial Tournament at Del Oro High Thursday night.

The Troubadours even their record to 4-4. Calaveras, the perennial Mother Lode League power, improves to 9-1.

Senior Raquel Smith added another six points to go with 10 rebounds for St. Francis. Chidera hit three field goals in the first quarter, Weaver matched that output in the second, while Smith did most of her offense from the free-throw line in the second half.

Calaveras stormed out of the break with a 20-point third quarter, thanks to three three-pointers by junior guard Brooke Nordahl. Meanwhile, the Troubies hit no buckets in that frame while getting only two – one from Weaver, one from guard Emily Dusel – in the fourth.

Impressively, the Troubies held Calaveras to just 28.1 percent shooting (9-for-32) but committed 27 turnovers and failed to convert any of 17 attempts from beyond the arc.

St. Francis will face the loser of the Woodcreek-Del Oro game at 4 p.m. on Friday. The Mike Takayama tournament is named in honor of the beloved head coach who mentored the Golden Eagles to two Sac-Joaquin Section titles and 18 league crowns in his 29-year career.
