Troubies roll past Timberwolves

LOOMIS, Calif. – Sophomores Brianna McGahan and Chidera Okoye each scored 12 points to lead St. Francis to a 49-13 win over Woodcreek in the second day of action at the Mike Takayama prep girls' basketball tournament at Del Oro High Friday night.

The Troubadours improve to 5-4 for the year.

St. Francis broke away in the second half, scoring 17 in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth after holding an 18-6 halftime lead. McGahan drained a pair of three-pointers in that third-quarter outburst while Okoye drained three field goals. McGahan and Oge Okoye then added a pair of buckets in the fourth. Meanwhile, St. Francis held the Timberwolves in check for no points in the entire fourth quarter until Bella Conner scored with 10 seconds left. In fact, WHS shot just 11.1 percent (5-for-45) for the game.

Junior guard Jo Jo Myers added seven points while senior post Raquel Smith chipped in another six. Smith also finished as SFHS's leading rebounder with seven boards, while the younger Okoye had five of her team's 17 steals. Point guard Emily Dusel came off the bench to contribute six assists.

The Troubies advance to the consolation championship at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon. They will face the winner of the Kennedy-Foothill (Palo Cedro) game, held later on Friday evening.

The eight-team Mike Takayama Memorial Tournament is named in honor of the beloved DOHS coach who led that program to more than 600 wins in his 29-year career.
