SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Juniors Izzy Asker and Alisha Anwar prevailed over their senior teammates Bianca Ariza and Samantha Sonntag in the Delta League Doubles final 6-1, 6-3 on Wednesday at Laguna Creek Racquet Club.
Asker and Anwar entered the day as the No. 3 seed and opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rachel Hoang and Sophia Wang of Pleasant Grove. The duo then beat Melissa Hassanzadah and Catherine Chow of Davis 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semifinals.
In the semifinals, they upset No. 2 seeded Davis team of Michela Gunther and Lyia Jiong 6-3, 6-4 to setup the all-SF final.
Ariza and Sonntag, who were the top seed, were the defending champions in the event. They had a bye in the first round Tuesday morning and reached the finals with two straight-set wins in the second round and semifinals. First, they posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mani Manquez and Reyna Shauman of Davis. They then defeated No. 4 seed Hiya Lohia and Loni Harris of Pleasant Grove 6-1, 6-4.
Senior Peyton Spellacy and sophomore Polina Greenberg paired for a first-round win over Katie Hsu and Violet Kwan of Cosumnes Oaks 6-1, 6-1. They were eliminated by No. 2 seed Gunter/Jiong of Davis.
All four players earn All-Delta League status for reaching the final and earn a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Doubles bracket to be played Nov. 7 at Johnson Racquet Club in Roseville.
