Tennis Defeats Rival Davis 8-1 to Win 10th in a Row

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Izzy Asker won a tiebreaker to close out a tight first set to roll to a straight set win at No. 4 singles as the St. Francis tennis team posted an 8-1 win over Davis in a Delta League dual match at Rio del Oro Racquet Club Tuesday. It was the 10th consecutive win for the team and 47th consecutive Delta League dual match victory.

"Davis is one our biggest rivals in our league," said Asker, who improved to 8-1 on the season. "Our team in incredibly deep from No. 1 singles to No. 3 doubles. We can clinch so many matches from throughout the lineup."

Asker clinched her first set 7-6 and then posted a 6-2 score in the second set over Lyna Jiang to clinch the victory.

"Up until the tiebreaker I was not playing too well but I needed to start off with a fresh mindset," said Asker. "After I reset, I started playing really well and finished the first set with a 7-1 win in the tiebreaker."

 Junior Alisha Anwar won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 over Michela Grunther and senior Sam Sonntag posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Maru Manquest at No. 3. Junior Alex Evans and sophomore Safaa Umar also posted wins at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, to clinch the match.

The Troubadours closed out the 8-1 win with a sweep in doubles. Seniors Bianca Ariza, the reigning GoTroubies.com Player of the Week, and Peyton Spellacy were 6-1, 6-3 winners at No. 1, while sophomore Polina Greenberg and junior Maddie Brown only dropped three games in a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2. Junior Emmy Goebels and sophomore Lauren Lai finished off the win with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3.

St. Francis (10-1, 5-0 Delta) hosts Elk Grove on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at Rio del Oro Racquet Club.
