Dunham kicks off SF weekend at state championships

FRESNO, Calif. – Senior Grace Dunham finished the 1,600-meter run in five minutes, 2.69 seconds to finish 12th in her heat and 24th overall, kicking off St. Francis' weekend at the 104th CIF track & field championships, held at Buchanan High Friday and Saturday.

Dunham is the lone Troubadour to compete in Friday's portion of the meet. She will join fellow seniors Ryann Strawn, Kelsey Sutch and Kayla Towne in the girls' 4x800 relay, held near the end of Saturday's session.

The UC Davis track and cross country commit opened with a 1:13.14 split and came home with a 1:16.18 final lap en route to her 5:02.69 time. Friday marked her second fastest performance of the year, trailing only the personal-best 4:58.32 from the Sacramento Meet of Champions on April 20. That PR puts Dunham fifth in the school record book.

The 4x800 squad shattered the SF record with a 9:21.35 at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet one week ago. That foursome includes three Troubies headed to Big West Conference programs next year: Dunham and Towne signed with UC Davis in the fall, while Ryann Strawn committed to UC Santa Barbara this spring. The relay is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. Saturday.
