Dunham, 4x800 relay win Delta League titles on Day 1

Dunham, 4x800 relay win Delta League titles on Day 1

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior Grace Dunham posted the fifth-best 3,200-meter time in school history to claim that championship, then led off the first-place 4x800 relay squad to highlight St. Francis on the first day of the Delta League Track & Field Championships, held at Elk Grove High.

The Troubadours sit third in the varsity team scoring with 34 points, trailing Davis (71.5) and Pleasant Grove (52.5). The majority of Saturday's events were preliminary heats that feed into Tuesday's finals, but the 3,200, 4x800 and several field events contested as scoring finals.

Dunham crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 42.63 seconds, surpassing the 11:05.38 she previously set at the Stanford Invitational earlier this season. The UC Davis commit becomes just the seventh runner in school history to surpass the 11-minute mark in the event, moving from eighth to fifth in the school record. Dunham now sits between eventual Cal runner Sydney Vandegrift (10:32.12) and eventual Northern Arizona athlete Miranda Myers (10:58.15) in SF annals.

Dunham's win in the 3,200 earned her 10 points toward the team score plus the first All-Delta League patch of the track & field season. The Troubies scored 13 in the distance race, with Ryann Strawn's 11:19.19 and Sunny Schranz' 11:37.00 good for seventh and eighth places, respectively.

Then in the final varsity event on the track, Dunham joined Ryann Strawn, Kelsey Sutch and Kayla Towne for a dominating win in the 4x800, thanks to a 9:45.06. That crew is a week removed from the 9:29.95 at the Sacramento Meet of Champions. Other varsity points came from freshman Jasleen Gandhoke, who finished second in the high jump with her 4-foot-10 clearance; and senior Elise Blomquist, who posted a 97-7 throw in the discus.

Mere minutes removed from the varsity high jump, Gandhoke reported to the 100 hurdles and became just the ninth Troubie in history to break the 16-second mark in that event. She led the trials with a 15.97 despite a 1.3 meters per second headwind. Gandhoke already ranked No. 2 among all-time St. Francis ninth graders for that race, behind only Reyna Johnson's 14.92 from the 2018 Sac-Joaquin Section Masters final.

St. Francis advanced multiple entrants in the varsity 800- and 100-meter races. Towne won the second prelim heat and finished second overall at 2:20.05, with Sutch and Pamela Vargas each posting personal records to place seventh (2:23.04) and ninth (2:24.96), respectively. Meanwhile, the Troubies will have two runners in Tuesday's 100 final, with Kyah Pickett and Caitlin Hafenstein each running 12.91. Pickett's time actually broke down to 12.901 for seventh place, with Hafenstein's 12.905 taking eighth.

Saturday's meet mostly consisted of varsity events in the morning, and frosh-soph events in the afternoon, with the exception of the 3,200s. Sophomore Antonija Jezildzic was St. Francis' top frosh-soph performer, winning the discus throw at 95-2. Fellow 10th grader Chloe Harrison placed second in the 3,200 at 12:22.80, cutting more than four full seconds off her previous PR.

The Delta League championships resume on Tuesday. The field events (pole vault, shot put, long jump) begin at noon, while the girls' frosh-soph 4x100 relay kicks off running events at 1 p.m. Among the key events for St. Francis include the 1,600 in which defending-champion Dunham and Towne enter as the No. 1 and 3 seeds. The varsity 100 and 800 finals take place at 3:25 and 3:45, respectively.
