Troubies shine at Sac State Classic

Troubies shine at Sac State Classic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Jasleen Gandhoke and Sunny Schranz collectively posted three of the best frosh marks in program history while seniors Grace Dunham and Kayla Towne each picked up event wins, highlighting St. Francis at the Sacramento State Track Classic, hosted by Jesuit High at that university's Hornet Stadium Saturday.

Towne captured the girls' 800-meter run with a time of two minutes, 21.15 seconds, with Dunham not far behind in third at 2:22.82. Dunham then followed with a winning 5:08.90 in the 1,600. Both runners are committed to UC Davis, the area collegiate rival to Sacramento State.

Schranz opened the day's running events by placing third in the 3,200 with a 11:45.19 time, the sixth-fastest time by a ninth grader in history, according to Athletic.net.

Gandhoke had the busiest meet of any of the Troubadour contingent: she placed fourth in the 100 hurdles with a wind-aided 16.11, fifth in the 300 hurdles at 48.45, and tied for fifth in the high jump with a final clearance of 5-foot-0. Her long hurdles time ranks third in school history among freshman, and the fastest since Camille Enes went 48.92 in 2016. Gandhoke likely would have broken her own school frosh record of 16.75 in the 100 hurdles on a calm day, but Saturday's cold breeze triggered the stadium wind gauge at 2.7 meters per second.

One SF highlight belonged to sophomore Penelope Cole, who cleared 8-0 in the pole vault. A regular on the team's relays in 2023, Cole made just her second appearance in the field event, following the 5-0 in the vault at last year's Delta League Center Meet. Impressively, she broke and rebroke her PR on the first attempt, despite an abbreviated approach down the runway.

Junior Stella Davenport and freshman Alexa Randall also posted huge PRs in their respective events. Davenport ran a 13:11.18 in the 3,200, improving 16 second from her previous best set a week earlier at the Glenn Poole Invitational.  Randall, perhaps better known as one of St. Francis' top tennis players, trimmed 1.43 seconds from her 400 time to a 1:03.11.

The Troubies return to action on Friday at the 85th Le Febvre Relays, hosted by Placer High.
