Troubies place strong third at Delta League center meet

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Freshman Jasleen Gandhoke won both the varsity 100-meter hurdles and high jump while placing second in the 300 hurdles, senior Kayla Towne finished second in each of the varsity 800 and 1,600, and the two 'A' relay squads finished second in their respective races, leading St. Francis' scoring finishers at the first Delta League center track & field meet at Elk Grove High School Thursday.

The Troubadours totaled 116.33 points, one behind Franklin (117.33), with both teams trailing Davis (150.67) in the varsity team scoring. Pleasant Grove scored 41.67 for fourth, with Cosumnes Oaks (41), Sheldon (16) and Elk Grove (11) following in fifth through seventh, respectively.

Gandhoke won the 100 hurdles with a slightly wind-hindered 16.29 seconds, hit a personal record of 5 feet, 3 inches in the high jump, then crossed in 50.30 to runner-up in the 300 hurdles. Rather unusually, her high jump series finished on a made jump: Gandhoke left the high jump apron to race in the hurdles, then never resumed to attempt the next height. The 5-3 mark moves her into a tie for fifth in school history, alongside Kamryn Carter's height at the 2019 Delta League Championships. It also puts her one inch shy of SF Athletics Hall of Famer Karen Lysaght's school record for a ninth grader.

Finally, Gandhoke raised her standing for the Stanford Invitational and Arcadia Invitational, each of which has a minimum 5-2 to qualify. After all of that, the Sacramento Country Day alumna was summoned the run the anchor leg of the Troubies' 4x400 for the meet finale. Gandhoke joined Kennedy Bishop, Colleen Medina and Alexa Randall for a second-place 4:17.53. In all, she scored 28 points of her own doing plus her share of the eight points in the 4x400 relay as the highest SF scorer for the meet.

Towne finished second to Davis freshman Norah Feldt in the 1,600 with a 5:14.63 early in the day, then followed with a 2:22.85 to place second to Feldt in the 800 later in the meet. She scored 16 total points toward the team scores with those finishes.

The St. Francis 4x100 squad of Medina, Kyah Pickett, Randall and Caitlin Hafenstein tallied another eight points with a runner-up finish, compiling a 50.15. Senior Ryann Strawn finished fourth behind Towne in the 1,600 at 5:20.38 then took third in the 3,200 with a 11:43.75 for another 14 points. The Troubies also picked up points on a pair of PRs in the vertical jumps: Abbey Pavelchik tied her best of 4-8 to place third in the high jump, while Penelope Cole matched her 8-6 from the LeFebvre Relays for second in the pole vault.

Elise Blomquist led St. Francis in each varsity throws event, placing fourth in the shot put at 32-7, then finishing her day with a fifth-place 93-2 in the discus ring.

Thursday's meet is one of two center meets that determine the final league championship, along with the April 17 center meet at Davis and the Delta League Championships on April 27 and 30 back at Elk Grove. St. Francis heads into its two-week spring break, with sprinters competing at Bella Vista's Bronco Speed Festival on Saturday. A select few will also make the trips to the Stanford Invitational (Mar. 29-30) and Arcadia Invitational (Apr. 5-6) during the break.
