Troubie track returns to action at Halden Invite

DAVIS, Calif. – Junior Alina Gutierrez, senior Kelsey Sutch and freshman Sunny Schranz each finished fourth in their respective varsity events to lead a small band of St. Francis track & field athletes at a cold and drizzly Halden Invitational, hosted by Davis at its own Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Saturday.

Gutierrez ran a 28.62 in the 200-meter dash, Sutch matched her season best of two minutes, 28.55 seconds in the 800; while Schranz cut more than a second from her personal best in the 3,200 with a 11:43.99 time. Gutierrez bested the 29.09 from the Bronco Speed Festival three weeks prior, with Saturday's crosswind resulting in a legal 1.7 meters per second reading.

Among the Troubadours' frosh-soph entries, freshman Nassali Serwanga had the best overall finish with a runner-up 52.72 in the 300 hurdles, just 0.18 behind winner Oceane Lacasse of Sequoia. Sophomore Antonija Jezildzic also finished third in each of shot put (26 feet, 3 inches) and dicsus throw (86-7).

Sutch also led St. Francis in the 1,600 with a ninth-place 5:26.47, her fastest time in that event since the 5:24.91 she ran at the 2022 Dublin Distance Fiesta. This continues the return to action from injury for the student leader, who took part in the 4x800 relay at last weekend's Arcadia Invitational. Sutch was a member of the 4x800 relay squad that finished second at last year's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet, but she sat out nearly the entirety of her senior cross country season and was sidelined during the first Delta League center meet in late March.

The weather impacted the morning and early-afternoon portion of the meet, with the early rain canceling both the high jump and pole vault.

St. Francis returns to Davis on Wednesday for the second Delta League center meet. The first events are scheduled for 10 a.m.
