Gandhoke, Dunham score varsity wins at second center meet

DAVIS, Calif. – Freshman Jasleen Gandhoke won both the varsity 100-meter hurdles and the high jump while senior Grace Dunham led a 1-2-4 team finish in the varsity 1,600, leading St. Francis at the second of two Delta League Center Meets, hosted by Davis at the Halden Track at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Wednesday.

As a team, the Troubadours finished third with 216 points, close behind Franklin's 240. The host Blue Devils ran away with the team victory with 322 points. Cosumnes Oaks was a distant fourth (110), with Pleasant Grove (80) and Elk Grove (18) rounding out the field. The center meets help determine the overall team championship.

Gandhoke ran the hurdles in 16.17 seconds, beating Davis' Izzy Cherry by almost a full second (17.03). Meanwhile, she cleared 5 feet, one inch in the high jump, three inches ahead of runner-up Mimi Abbker of Davis. Gandhoke's time is her fastest wind-legal mark of her young career, and puts her ninth in school history ahead of teammate and fellow ninth grader Tayli Paeu-Lindgren (16.19).

Dunham ran a season-best 5:02.96, improving by almost exactly one second over the 5:03.94 she ran at the Arcadia Invitational on April 6. This was also the second-fastest 1,600 in the career of the UC Davis commit, behind only the 5:02.27 she posted at last year's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet. Kayla Towne, Dunham's future Aggie teammate, placed second with a season-best of her own (5:09.81). Ryann Strawn crossed in fourth at 5:17.01.

Dunham chipped in second-place points in the varsity 800, thanks to a 2:22.38.

One particular highlight belonged to senior Kyah Pickett in one of the last individual sprints of the day. She ran a 26.44 to place fourth overall and tops among all St. Francis finishers in the event. Not only did that represent a 0.60 improvement from her previous PR, set at the Delta League championship meet last season, but it stands as the fastest 200 by any Troubie in almost five full years. Pickett's former teammate and current Boise State sprinter Kenna DeLemos went 26.29 in the 2019 league championship final. The 26.44 also automatically earns her a spot in the SJS Division I meet, as it surpasses the qualifying standard of 26.68.

While Gandhoke and Dunham had the lone varsity wins for the Troubies, sophomore Lucia Vicio, sophomore Antonija Jezildzic and freshman Nassali Serwanga each claimed frosh-soph events on Wednesday. Vicio won the 200 at 27.87 while placing second in the 100 (13.27). Serwanga bested the field in the 400 at 1:04.69, and was the runner-up to Vicio in the 200 (28.03). Jezildzic won the discus throw with an 85-9, while 29-0 push gave her second place in the shot.

Several Troubadours made their season or even career debuts in the meet, although perhaps none more notable than senior Yasmin Azar. The Delta League Player of the Year, the leading scorer for the 2024 SJS and NorCal champions, and a soccer commit to Coastal Carolina, Azar finished 10th among 50 runners in the 100 at 13.09, then improved to seventh (among 47 entrants) in the 200 at 26.98. Azar has been on the track & field team all season, but had not competed in a meet, mostly due to conflicts with her club soccer schedule.

The Delta League center meet is the first of three meets for St. Francis this week. A crew of 1,600 and 3,200 runners will compete at Sheldon's Glenn Rogers Distance Carnival on Friday, then a select group of Troubadours will represent at the Sacramento Meet of Champions at ARC on Saturday.
