ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Seniors Ryann Strawn and Grace Dunham each won varsity events while ninth graders Jasleen Gandhoke and Sunny Schranz each bested frosh-soph events to lead St. Francis in the season-opening Glenn Poole Invitational prep track & field meet at Oakmont High Saturday.
Strawn opened the day with a winning time of 11 minutes, 29.58 seconds in the varsity 3,200-meter run, while Dunham outraced 37 finishers with a 5:13.91 in the 1,600. Gandhoke won the frosh-soph 100 hurdles by more than seven tenths of a second with her 16.75, with Schranz beat out Oak Ridge's Emi Madsen for the frosh-soph 3,200 with a 12:05.10 clocking.
Schranz' time was so fast that she would have placed fifth in the varsity race, with only four runners beating the 12-minute mark. Similarly, Gandhoke cleared 5-feet-0 in her Troubadour debut in the high jump, second only to Sheldon's Margot Zemke (5-2). Yet that height matched that of varsity winner Alyssa Porter of Pleasant Grove.
Gandhoke, who went 5-2 in the team's intrasquad meet on Wednesday, is the first SF competitor to break the 5-foot barrier in the event since Kamryn Carter beat 5-3 at the 2019 Delta League championships. She completed her day with a second-place 49.92 in the 300 hurdles – oddly finishing behind only Sheldon's Zemke.
St. Francis returns to action in one week at the Sacramento State High School Classic on March 2.
