Troubies upset Tigers to kick off SJS hoop playoffs

PATTERSON, Calif. – Freshman Tayli Paeu-Lindgren posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds while senior Brianna McGahan and junior Sydney Teoh each netted a team-best 11 points, as No. 10-seeded St. Francis scored a 50-36 mild upset over No. 7-seeded Patterson in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section girls' basketball tournament Wednesday.

The Troubadours have now won four straight games, improving to 15-13 for the season. The Tigers close out the year with an impressive 26-3 record.

Wednesday's performance marks the second career double-double for Paeu-Lindgren, who posted totals of 14 and 13 in a West Coast Jamboree win over Oakland back on December 29. She also blocked two shots in the fourth period to match teammate Chidera Okoye, who finished with a solid all-around game: eight points, eight rebounds, six assists and a whopping nine steals. In fact, Okoye and Paeu-Lindgren blocked the first two Patterson shots in the final frame, further distancing the Tigers from their brief comeback run in the third.

The Troubies scored 11 unanswered points to gain some separation in the second period, McGahan assisted sophomore Lexi London on a corner three and a pull-up jumper as part of that run, while Okoye scored on a steal and a long fast break at the midpoint of the period. Patterson finally broke its scoreless streak when guard Jayla Bueno converted 1 of 2 from the line in the final two minutes before the break.

Undeterred, the Tigers managed to battle from the 26-11 deficit to margins of just six points on two different occasions. Taylor Mason banked a three-pointer to spark a 7-0 run back to 29-23, then she assisted Nevaeh Goins down low to set the board at 31-25 with 3:04 left. However, London canned another corner three on the next trip down, Okoye scored two more in the paint and assisted McGahan on a 16-footer, and Teoh sank a pull-up jumper to combine for an 11-3 finish. St. Francis led, 42-28, heading into the finale, and maintained at least an 11-point lead the rest of the way.

Almost fittingly, the fourth period featured highlights by several of the younger Troubies on the roster. A sweet fadeaway by Paeu-Lindgren extended the lead to as much as 17 (45-28) in the opening minutes. Freshman Layla Hernandez, making her varsity debut after starring for the program's JV Gold squad, came up with a diving offensive rebound underneath the Patterson hoop. Sophomore guard Laila Mendoza came up with a defensive rebound then went coast-to-coast to make it 47-34 at the 2:43 mark, then she flipped an assist for a McGahan three-pointer with 40 ticks left for the game's final score.

St. Francis shot just 30.2 percent (19-for-63) for the game, including .150 (3-for-20) from beyond the three-point arc, instead executing on defense. McGahan added another six steals to her scoring total and had six of her eight rebounds on the defensive end of the court.

The Troubies will travel to No. 2 Vanden, which rolled to a 75-32 win over No. 15 Ceres. However, the Viking boys also won their first-round tilt against Golden Valley, which should move the girls' quarterfinal to 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Fairfield. Tickets are available exclusively through GoFan.
