DAVIS, Calif. – Senior Brianna McGahan scored a career-high 30 points in front of her hometown crowd, as St. Francis hung on against Davis, 59-55, in the varsity finale of a Delta League girls' basketball doubleheader Monday night.
The Troubadours improve to 12-13 overall and 7-3 in league play, the latter of which moves them into sole possession of third place. Franklin and Cosumnes Oaks each share first place at 8-2, with the Blue Devils dropping into fourth (6-5).
McGahan poured in 11 of 17 field goal attempts, including 4-for-6 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. She also led her team with six rebounds. Sophomore Lexi London added 11 points while junior Sydney Teoh chipped in another 10. McGahan and fellow senior Chidera Okoye also notched steals totals of five and six, respectively.
St. Francis did not allow a field goal for the last 3:17 of the first half, stretching a tight 22-21 margin into a 32-24 halftime lead. McGahan assisted London for a three-pointer at 4:08 in the third to extend the advantage to 15 points at 41-26, then McGahan later knocked down a Teoh-assisted trey at 2:55 to make it 46-30.
However, Davis senior Alia Cordone buried a three-pointer of her own near the end of the third period, then scored three times in the paint in leading her team all the way back to a 50-50 tie with 4:22 left. The two rivals equalized two more times down the stretch, with another Cordone three knotting the game at 53-53 with 3:46 to go, then a Teoh-to-McGahan bucket evening the proceedings at 55-55 with just 2:14 remaining.
Okoye plowed her way through the key to boost the Troubies back up by 57-55 with 1:44, then McGahan blocked a shot on the other end to protect that lead with 35 ticks left. At this point, Davis had committed only one team foul in the fourth, requiring four more to put SF on the free-throw line and a chance to regain the ball with only a one-possession deficit. Instead, London went to the line at 0:13, and drained both throws.
McGahan's 30 eclipses her old best of 28, set in the January 19 loss at Pleasant Grove. It also represents the first time a Troubadour has scored 30 or more in a game since Mia Fleming-Mullins tallied 31 against Cosumnes Oaks back on February 3, 2020.
Prior to the varsity win, JV Gold suffered a 47-37 loss to Davis in the doubleheader opener. Freshman Layla Hernandez posted a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, but the Troubies could not overcome a 27-14 halftime deficit in suffering its first loss in almost two weeks. JV Gold slips to 17-9 for the year.
St. Francis' JV Red squad closes out its 2023-24 season at home on Tuesday against Granite Bay for a 4 p.m. tip. Varsity and JV Gold each returns to action on Wednesday at Sheldon for a 5:00/6:30 p.m. doubleheader.
