SF tramples Herd to stay in tough league race

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior Brianna McGahan, senior Chidera Okoye and sophomore Lexi London each scored in double figures as St. Francis rolled past Elk Grove, 71-19, in the varsity nightcap of a Delta League girls' basketball doubleheader Friday night. The varsity win followed a whopping 59-5 by the Troubadours' JV Gold squad.

SF's top squad improves to 11-12 for the season and 6-3 in league play, good for a tie for third in the standings with Davis. Cosumnes Oaks and Franklin share first place in the conference at 7-2.

McGahan hit 8 of 15 from the field with seven rebounds and five steals in just 20 minutes on the court. Okoye shot 5-for-7 with four rebounds for 12 points in only 13 minutes, while London sank two three-pointers as part of her 12-point output. In fact, seven Troubadours scored multiple field goals, along with Tayli Paeu-Lindgren (eight points), Gianna Seghesio (seven), Laila Mendoza (six) and Sydney Teoh (four). Aubrey O'Donnell made her only shot, plus she grabbed five rebounds with blocked a pair of shots.

St. Francis held a 23-3 lead after the first period, with only a three-pointer by sophomore Ashlin Cutler preventing a shutout quarter. McGahan scored three times in the second to extend the lead to 43-13 at halftime. Seghesio drained a three-pointer near the end of the third, with the Troubies leading 59-16 going to the finale.

JV Gold's win proved even more dominating, with all 12 active players scoring in some fashion. Sophomore guard Nevaeh Gavino led the way with 10 points, including consecutive three-pointers in the second frame. Sophomore Reese Walker added another nine points, while freshman Layla Hernandez led the boards with nine rebounds. Gavino also had three steals, matching Sienna Dukes in that department.

St. Francis led 18-2 after the first period and 37-4 at the break. In fact, the Herd did not manage a field goal in the entire second half, with Abby Fry's 1 of 2 from the free-throw line accounting for the only points.

The Troubies varsity and JV Gold head to Whitney on Saturday for a 4:00/5:30 p.m. doubleheader, then resume league play on Monday at Davis. Coincidentally, St. Francis' three soccer teams also travel to Davis on that same evening, meaning Troubie fans could see parts of two different crucial league games in one location.
