SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis cross country teams won both Delta League races at the Cherry Island Soccer Complex on Wednesday. Sophomore Cate Joaquin was the individual varsity winner, while freshman Daphne Witherall took the Frosh/Soph race.

Joaquin took the Varsity race for the second consecutive season, crossing first in 18:45 as the Troubadours placed their top five in the top six. Senior Haley Silva was third overall in 18:51, while sophomore Tatiana Cornejo was fourth. The Troubies posted a team score of 19.

"We used it as a work out today and helped push each other to stay together," said Cornejo, who placed 10th at the Woodbridge Invitational last weekend.

Isabella Fauria was fifth overall in 19:02, while Hanna Hekkanen placed sixth (19:25). Senior Emma Hollenbach was 26th overall (21:22) and senior Elizabeth Cole (21:38) was 28th overall.

Freshman Daphne Witherell took the Frosh/Soph title in 12:35, winning her first career race. She was fifth in the Oakmont Invitational to start the season.

Sophomore Claire Silva, who won the Woodbridge Invitational Gold Sophomore race, was second overall in 12:35.

"We did a tempo run and four girls finished together and we ended up winning," said Silva. "It was fun to win Woodbridge. I felt really good in that race."

Freshman Simone DeBerry, Silva and classmate Paige Quigley joined Witherell in crossing the line together, recording the top four finishes in the race. Quigley was the winner of the Woodbridge Invitational Freshman Gold race.

"The plan was to run as a pack and finish together," said Quigley. "That way we could run together and push each other."

Sophomore Peyton Carson was the fifth finisher in 12:56. The F/S team had a winning team score of 18 points.
