Troubie golf punches ticket to section playoffs

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Sophomore Arden Han-Wei fired a 2-under-par 70 while senior Olivia Lee added a 79 to lead St. Francis to a second-place team score of 408 in the third and final Delta League girls' golf center tournament at WildHawk Golf Club, clinching a spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship.

Pleasant Grove dominated its way to a 7-under 353 to capture the league title. The Troubadours' 408 outdueled Franklin (415) and Davis (424) in the race for second place, while Cosumnes Oaks placed fifth with a 446. The top three teams earn the Delta League's automatic berths to the section divisional tourney, while the Blue Devils and Wolfpack each picked up at-large spots for beating the qualifying standard of 450 strokes.

Sheldon finished sixth at 478 strokes, but grabbed five of the six individual qualifiers to the section postseason. Elk Grove only fielded individuals and thus did not post a team score.

Han-Wei also finished third individually in Monday's tourney, behind only Alaythia Hinds (65) and Gianna Singh (66), both of PG. She posted a 1-over 37 to start the day on WildHawk's back nine, then finished the day with a 3-under 33 on the front nine, thanks to birdies on 5, 6 and 8. On the sixth hole, Han-Wei hit her tee shot deep into the rough just beyond a row of trees. However, her approach rolled up to the hole and lipped out, leaving her a gimme for birdie.

Lee also rallied on the second half of her day, making par on 10-12 before falling to 6-over by the turn. She then shot a 1-over 37 on the front nine to give the Troubies their No. 2 score of the day.

Nydia Garcia (83) and Momina Niazi (87) had St. Francis' third and fourth scores, with Natalie Zipser and Aja Garcia each finishing at 89 to complete the team score.

The Delta League also handed out its year-end awards, with Player of the Year honors going to Singh. Han-Wei finished third and Lee finished seventh in the final overall standings. Each will officially earn one of the 10 All-Delta League honors when those awards are rolled out in November, although both players received their patches after Monday's tourney. This will be the second straight all-league nod for Han-Wei, last year's Player of the Year winner.

The CIF-SJS Division I tourney takes place on October 23 at Micke Grove Golf Course in Lodi. Players will tee off at 9 a.m. in a shotgun format. The D-I championship features schools from the Delta League, the Sierra Foothill League (which SF will join next year) and the host Tri-City Athletic League. Six teams and nine at-large individuals will then move on to the Section Masters tourney at the Reserve at Spanos Park on October 30.
