Troubies open 2023 golf season with win over Wolfpack

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Arden Han-Wei carded a 1-under-par 35 while senior Olivia Lee and freshman Momina Niazi each turned in matching 37s, leading St. Francis to a 205-214 win over Cosumnes Oaks in a Delta League girls' golf dual match at Haggin Oaks Wednesday afternoon.

The Troubadours open their season at 1-0, both overall and in league play. Tuesday's win also kicks off a new coaching era, as former LPGA Tour pro Charlotte Mayorkas began her first season at the helm.

Senior Aja Garcia finished with an 11-over 47, freshman Nydia Garcia came through with a 49 and junior Jenny Ramos scored a 53 across the front nine of Haggin Oaks' Arcade course.

Jahzara Vang led CO with a 2-over 38, with Priyana Singh (41), Nina Yee (43) and Presley Wong (45) contributing bogey rounds or better. In the end, St. Francis won the matchup due to its strength in the top half of the lineup, led by Han-Wei, the reigning Delta League Player of the Year.

Han-Wei highlighted her round with an eagle on the par-4 seventh and a birdie on the par-5 fourth, the latter of which is the most difficult hole on the course. Lee birdied the par-4 sixth and came away with a par on that tough fourth. Meanwhile, only a bogey on the par-3 fourth kept Niazi from a clean sheet for her first round as a Troubadour.

St. Francis returns to Haggin Oaks on Monday for the first of three Delta League center tournaments, in which all member schools convene for a full 18 holes. The first group tees off at noon.
