Han-Wei leads Troubies at first league tourney

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Arden Han-Wei carded a 2-under-par 70 to lead St. Francis to a second-place team score of 412 strokes in the first of three Delta League girls' golf center tournaments at Haggin Oaks Monday. She placed third overall among seven teams and 37 total players.

Pleasant Grove won the overall team race with 366 strokes, despite the absence of its No. 2 player, Alaythia Hinds. The Eagles also had the top two spots on the individual leaderboard, with Gianna Singh finishing with a blistering 12-under-par 60 and Petra Yee finishing second at 5-under 72.

The Troubadours won a relatively tight battle for second place with their 412 total, just ahead of Cosumnes Oaks (417) and Franklin (419) and 15 strokes ahead of Davis (427). Sheldon finished sixth with 498 strokes, while Elk Grove fielded just one player and thus did not post a team score. For reference, the qualifying standard for the Sac-Joaquin Section postseason at the third center tourney is 450 strokes.

Han-Wei posted a 1-under 35 on each of the front and back nine holes en route to her 70. She birdied the par-5 fourth, the par-4 seventh and the par-4 15th as part of her round. Impressively, hole 4 is the toughest rated hole on Haggin Oaks' Arcade Creek course.

Olivia Lee posted SF's second-best score with a 7-over 79, good for a tie for seventh individually, with freshman Momina Niazi close behind at 81. Nydia Garcia (89) and Natalie Zipser (93) also counted their scores toward the team total, while Jenny Ramos completed the lineup with 104.

Monday's event is the first of three Delta League center tournaments, each of which help determine all-league honors and crown a league champion. The October 2 tourney takes place at Bartley Cavanaugh, while the October 16 season finale at WildHawk determines CIF-SJS qualification. Furthermore, the center tourneys consist of a full 18-hole round, in contrast to the 9-hole dual matches.

St. Francis returns to action against Sheldon on Wednesday at WildHawk Golf Club.
