Troubie soccer kicks off new year on winning note

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Junior midfielder Micaela Romo scored the lone goal off a corner kick to lead the St. Francis varsity to a 1-0 win over Elk Grove in Delta League girls' soccer action Tuesday afternoon, part of the program's return to action in the new calendar year.

All three of the Troubadours' soccer teams won by shutout, with JV Gold dispatching the Thundering Herd by a 4-0 final and JV Red defeating Ponderosa, 1-0.

The Troubies' varsity improves to 8-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in league play in its first game since the Tri-Valley Classic in Danville on December 18.

Romo, who matched teammates Jaycee DeFazio and Brooke Castro with three shots, netted her game-winner in the 16th minute of play. This marks the team-leading 10th goal for the season.

Meanwhile, the Troubadours' junior varsity Red squad collected a 2-0 victory against Ponderosa at Cristo Rey High School. Sofia Rabinovitz converted an assist from Abby Clark in the 36th minute to put SFHS on the board, then Olivia Hamm walked up an buried a shot five minutes into the second half for the game's second score.

The Troubies' JV Gold team followed the varsity team at Elk Grove. Mia Barsotti scored two goals while Yasmine Azar and Estelle Bacsafra added one each. St. Francis held a 1-0 halftime lead on the Herd, who opted to stack the field with defenders. Head coach Alex Hoang adjusted to the strategy after the break, and his team answered with three second-half scores. Still, the Gold Troubies outshot their hosts by a whopping 39-0 margin.

The SFHS varsity and JV Gold teams return to Cristo Rey to host Davis on Thursday at 4 and 6 p.m. The JV Red will host Oak Ridge on its campus field at 3:30 that afternoon.
