Troubies break from finals to blank Huskies

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –  Seniors Alex Davis and Laila Hadid each netted their first goals of the season to lead the St. Francis varsity to a 6-0 win over Sheldon in Delta League girls' soccer action at Cristo Rey High School Tuesday night. The doubleheader took place amidst the school's week of final examinations.

The SFHS varsity improves to 6-1-1 for the year, with a 2-0-1 league mark.

Audrey Shackelford scored a goal with assists to Mika Shinoda and Caroline Murdoch for three total points. Jaycee DeFazio came up with the game's opening goal, coverting an assist from Elise Thomas in the fourth minute. Davis hit her first goal n the 24th, while Hadid had the lone second-half goal on a pass from Kenna DeLemos.

St. Francis scored its first three goals within a span of 109 seconds, then added scores in the 13th (Murdoch) and 24th (Davis) to claim a 5-0 lead. The Troubies largely stayed in clock-management mode throughout the second half, save for Hadid's goal less than four minutes after the break.

The Troubadour junior varsity Gold squad then followed with a scrimmage with the Huskies in the nightcap, with Sophia Fahey, Kyah Pickett and Julia Porter each scoring two goals. Sheldon's JV team only fielded nine players so St. Francis head coach Alex Hoang matched the numbers by putting only nine on the field. The JV game was also shortened to two 20-minute halves, and the contest officially goes in as a forfeit.

Porter and Pickett each had their braces within the first 17 minutes of play, giving the Troubies a 4-0 lead at halftime. Fahey scored both of her goals in nearly identical fashion, collecting cross-cage passes from Nayeli Kojima right in front of the cage. Angelina Delaiini, Caitlin Hafenstein, Maggie Koerwitz, Camdyn Zucker, Ava Hawkinson and Emily Hartmann each had one goal. Tacori Abril also had an assist, feeding Koerwitz' score in the 26th minute.

The JV Gold and JV Red participate in their annual Holiday Fest intrasquad game on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the varsity team heads to Danville to compete in the Tri-Valley Classic. The Troubies will face Clayton Valley at Sycamore Valley Park on Friday morning (10:45 a.m.), head to Monte Vista that afternoon (3:45 p.m.), then return to Sycamore Valley Park on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. matchup with Maria Carillo.
