Softball Drops Heartbreaker in Playoff Opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis softball team pounded out 21 hits and scored 13 runs but came up short in the Sac-Joaquin Section DII playoff opener against No. 11 Woodcreek 14-13.

St. Francis, the No. 6 seed, fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first before Chloe Smith, who went 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored, hit a home run to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Timberwolves would push the lead to 8-1after a five-run second and single run in the top of the third. The Troubadours rallied in the third, scoring five runs to pull within 2 at 8-6 and cut the lead to 8-7 in the fifth.

Woodcreek runs in the sixth and seventh extended the lead to 14-10 entering the final half inning. SF rallied for three runs behind fpour consecutive hits. Sydney Littles led off with a single before Amy Abueg doubled in the gap. Chloe Smith followed with a double to score two and Hope Jenkins knocked her in but was thrown out at second to slow the rally.

Jenkins took the loss allowing seven runs over 2.1 innings. Senior Arden Hatch tried to help the comeback but Sf gave up five unearned runs over her 4.2 innings.

Senior Gabbi Guerrera went 3-for-5 in her final game with freshman Grace Jenkins and Amy Abueg both recording three hits in the loss.

The Troubadours fell to 17-11 overall on the season.
