Softball Opens with 14-1 Win over Laguna Creek

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior first baseman Bella Valentine had three hits to lead St. Francis to a 14-1 victory over Laguna Creek Friday.

"It is a very good start," said Valentine, who went 3-for-4 on the day. "We played well as a team together and did well offensively and defensively going all over the field."

The Troubadours started the season off with an eight-run first inning and scored all 14 runs over the first three innings. The first eight batters reached base for the Troubies with Gabbi Guerrera knocking in two with a single and Grace Jenkins doubling in a run in the first.

Chloe Smith walked and Valentine recorded her second hit of the game to start the second, eventually scoring on an error and fielder's choice to push the lead to 10-0. Haley Kim added a run-scoring single to plate Sage Davis.

Smith hit her first home run of the season to start the third and Davis knocked in two with a double.

"It is a big confidence booster," said Valentine. "We know what we need to work on and we know what we can do."

Freshman Hope Jenkins pitched three scoreless innings with three strikeouts and five walks in her prep debut.

"It felt pretty good and started off the season right," said Jenkins. "I learned that I have a team behind me that is going to make plays."

Five players had multiple hits in the game with senior Gabbi Guerrera going 2-for-43 with three runs knocked in and three runs scored. Sophomore Sage Davis went 2-for-2 with two RBI and freshman Amy Abueg and Grace Jenkins had two hits in their debuts.

St. Francis travels to Del Oro Next Saturday for their next game.
