Softball Wins Twice at Franklin Preseason Tournament

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis softball team won a pair of games at the Franklin Preseason Tournament Friday at the Sacramento Softball Complex defeating River City 11-10 and McQueen 8-5 out of Reno, Nev.

Senior Caitlin Caldwell pitched a scoreless fourth to seal the win for the Troubies after the two teams combined for 21 runs over the first three innings.

Caldwell had a bases loaded triple in the first to score three runs and Bella Valentine knocked in two with a single as St. Francis (2-1) built a 5-0 lead. Senior Chloe Smith hit her second home run of the season, a three-run shot in the second to extend the lead to 8-3.

Sophomore Daniella Guerrera and freshman Amy Abueg doubled in runs in the third as SF led 11-6.

River City rallied to load the bases off starter Arden Hatch (1-1), who was replaced by Caldwell. She allowed a triple and single before shutting down the rally with the Troubies holding on to an 11-10 lead. SF went 1-2-3 in the fourth but Caldwell equaled the scoreless inning to secure the win with the save.

In the opener Friday afternoon, St. Francis fell behind 4-0 but rallied for the win. Freshman Hope Jenkins tripled to score two and Daniella Guerrera singled her home to cut the lead to 4-3.

Caldwell pinch hit in the third with the bases loaded to score two and take the lead 5-4. Smith doubled in two more and later scored on a steal of home for an 8-5 lead.

Hope Jenkins (2-0) settled down after the tough first inning to finish with four strikeouts and five earned runs for the win.

St. Francis (4-1) continues play in the tournament on Saturday.
