Water polo places 10th at Szmidt Memorial tourney

NAPA, Calif. -- St. Francis High girls water polo posted an 8-6 win over Vintage then lost by a 10-4 final to Ripon on the ninth-place game of the Juian Szmidt Memorial Tournament, hosted by Napa High Friday and Saturday.

Junior Ava Stimson was the team's high scorer on Saturday, netting two goals in the victory against the Crushers then following with a hat trick against Ripon. Junior Gauri Mathrakott posted three goals with three assists and three steals against Vintage, while Rory Peters added the other two scores in the day's opener.

The Troubies enjoyed a 10-9 sudden victory against Rodriguez High following a 13-3 loss to Lodi in Friday's portion of the tourney. Stimson was the leading Troubie offensive player on that day, talling seven goals to go with four steals.

The 2021 Szmidt Memorial Tournament drew 16 teams from throughout Northern and Central California, reaching as far north as the Redwood Empire and as far south as two Clovis high schools.
