Troubies split first day at Julian Szmidt Memorial

NAPA, Calif. - Senior Rory Peters netted the game-winner in sudden-victory overtime to lift St. Francis to a 10-9 win over Fairfield's Rodriguez High on the first day of action at the Julian Szmidt Memorial girls water polo tournament at Napa High Friday afternoon. The Troubadours lost their opening game to Lodi by a 13-3 final.

SFHS will now contend for ninth through 12th place at the 16-team tourney named in memory of the former Napa-area coach and aquatics director. The Troubies will open with Vintage High School at 9:55 a.m. on Saturday, then will take on either El Capitan or Ripon, which square off immediately before.

The 2021 Szmidt Memorial Tournament drew teams from throughout Northern and Central California, ranging from Santa Rosa's Cardinal Newman, to Clovis North and East to Walnut Creek's Northgate High.
