Water Polo’s Alyssa Jacobsen to Sign with George Washington University

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Alyssa Jacobsen has verbally committed and will sign with the George Washington Water Polo program on Wednesday.

"I am super excited," said Jacobsen. "I never thought it would come so soon and it happened really quickly. It is really exciting because I have known for a while it was my top college. For that commitment to happen, I feel so excited to be part of the Colonial community."

Jacobsen will play for Colonial Head Coach Barry King, who directs both the men's and women's programs. Last spring, the GW women tallied 14 victories in their first season under King with their best winning percentage since 2013. They also collected their most CWPA wins in 13 years to earn the No. 6 seed for the CWPA Tournament.

"Based on the all-around school atmosphere and team, I could see myself being a part of it," said Jacobsen. "It felt like home when I was there."

Jacobsen has been a four-year letter winner for the program, scoring 49 goals and recording 39 assists during her career.

"Alyssa has had a lot of options for colleges," said Head Coach Emily Whalen. "She went on several recruit trips and her grades alone could carry her. After her recruit trip to GW, she seemed like she knew that was the place for her. I'm so excited for her to be going to such a good school and she will be a leader in the pool."

Jacobsen, plans to study Biology with a pre-med track to go into Physician Assistant School after graduation, has played water polo since the fifth grade but never expected to be able to continue her career while getting a great academic institution.

"It is so exciting to continue my career in college," said Jacobsen. "I never thought I would when I started water polo when I as little. It is such an honor to be able to continue my athletic career and studying at a great school. It is exciting to have both the opportunities."

Jacobsen is literally still playing with the Sac-Joaquin Semifinals being conducted today with a berth in Saturday's final on the line. She hopes to continue her St. Francis Polo experience as long as possible.

"It means so much to me," said Jacobsen. "These girls are my family. They are my people. I have built such great relationships with them at school and on the pool deck. They will always hold a special place in my heart. When we compete, it is really something special."

Jacobsen will participate in the St. Francis NCAA Signing Day Celebration on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
