Water Polo Edges Rival Rio Americano 8-7

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Caroline Wilkins scored three times and had three assists and the St. Francis defense held back a late rally as the Troubadours edged rival Rio Americano 8-7 Tuesday night at the Jesuit High School pool.

"It was a great team win," said Wilkins. "Everyone put up some goals and we were working together and communicating to the get the assists and shots. Everyone stepped up today. I was really proud with how we played."

Wilkins led the effort with three goals and senior Kendall Houck added two. Junior Libby Slater had two goals and two assists, while senior Alyssa Jacobsen each added tally in the game.

St. Francis led from the beginning but Rio Americano kept fighting back in the game, pulling within one goal several times with SF responding to extend the lead. The game-winning goal ended up being a great shot off a rebound by Houck to extend the lead to 8-6.

"I shot it and she caught the rebound," said Wilkins. "She fired it in and that is what teammates are all about getting each other's backs. I am really proud of it."

Rio scored to cut the deficit to 8-7 and had a late chance to tie the game but goalie Claire McManus stuffed the attempt.

The team is at the Granite Bay Tournament this weekend with games against Woodcreek and Encinal on Friday and Palo Alto and Clayton Valley on Saturday.
